Having spent the best part of 3 days to get Win 7 installed on a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo LA 1703, I feel qualified to make comments about installing and when to do what..

We installed Win 7 on various other Laptops, Acer, Dell, HP and an 6 year old Sony Vaio. All of them had either 512 or 1Gb of RAM.

Various issues came up, I will summerize all of them here.

    Upgrading:
Important - doesn't work from XP properly. The best thing to do is to create another partition, install fresh and then copy files over from XP folders...

Vista - please read on, there are some important things to consider and do.

Clean install: Clearly best option, just ensure you back up all your files first, they will be gone. Don't forget 'Bookmarks' - I used to and it drives you mad if you know 'it was there' and now you have to google all over again.

Here we go: <<<<Read all of this before start!!!>>>

In any case, proven 4 times by now, follow these steps:

    1. Go to your manufacturer of PC/Laptop,Motherboard, etc... and download the latest VISTA upgrade BIOS version. Tip: Use an ISO format, burn to cd (not Mem Stick) and update according to manufacturer. This is very important and seems to have a lot to do with "when Win 7 hangs".

Once upgraded, disable all USB scenarios in the BIOS, LAN BOOT, anything what is not needed apart from what is needed to run the PC. That could mean NO USB keyboard, USB mouse, whatever, back to basics. Save and reboot.

    2. Go through install procedure, in this case 'Custom' and click on 'New'. This will create another partition (100Mb or so) ignore that, it will be deleted later... Select the drive you want to have Win 7 installed on, and off you go....

    3. Now you need a bit of patience... Do not interrupt, even if it takes 20 mins or so and nothing seems to happen. Leave it alone. IF it get's stuck at "completing installation" (seems the last process, but it isn't) for more than 30 mins, press "SHIFT+F10" which opens a dos window. Type 'explorer.exe' in the dos window and press <ENTER>. It will start doing all sorts of things, usually ending with a <re-boot> and another 20 mins of finalizing installation.

    4. In my experience, you end up wit a working Win 7 OS.

    Upgrade from VISTA:

Do not ignore what I mentioned before. Upgrade BIOS, etc, all possible driver updates you can find, especially if you have a Laptop. Switch off USB, etc...

Then follow instructions on "install win 7" to upgrade...

So always via DVD, ISO, not mem stick.

Hope that helps - worked for me.

    Brilliant!

Thanks a lot - worked perfect. I had problems but the BIOS upgrade saved the day.

    :P
